How do you know who makes the best plastic injection molds? You may hear about Injection molding China or Injection molding suppliers from your friends and business partners, but how can you be sure that they’re as good as they say? How can you be sure that you aren’t risking the quality of your product and reputation by working with subpar manufacturers? With tips like these, you’ll be able to tell which manufacturing companies are reliable and which ones aren’t, leading to more successful production runs and happier customers in the end.

If you’re looking to make a part, or many parts, that require injection molding, then you’ll probably want to know how much an injection mold costs. This is especially true if your business uses injection molds regularly (or even just occasionally). The cost of an injection mold can vary dramatically based on a number of factors—type of material used, size and complexity of part design and more. A cheap injection mold may run several hundred dollars while more complex ones can easily top five figures. Your best bet when trying to find out how much an injection mold costs is to contact multiple injection molding suppliers.

Are There Consumables Included in the Price?

One of the biggest factors to consider when you’re evaluating a potential plastic injection mold supplier is how many consumables (mold cavity inserts, core pins, sprue bushings) are included in their price. Consumables are parts of your molds that get used up as you make products; things like sprue bushings, gates and runners (yes, those should all be in your molds) need to be replaced after each product is molded. Some companies include these items in their total mold cost; others will sell them to you for an additional fee. Be sure to ask about pricing for consumables before locking down a contract with any injection molding manufacturer.

How Much Does it Cost to Make Changes to My Design?

The benefits of using an injection molding manufacturer in China are obvious. Whether you’re creating products for your company or you’re making a custom gift, it can be cost-effective to outsource production to a place that has lower labor costs and access to top-notch tools. However, even with many factories under one roof, there is still room for error and misunderstandings. For example, if there are design changes after an order has been approved or if you need to have your product delivered on short notice, those things can incur additional charges. Knowing what kinds of services your supplier offers (and which ones they don’t) is critical when working with an injection molding company in China.

What are the Main Considerations When Picking an Injection Mold Maker?

Do you want to make one or two parts? If you’re making fewer than 100,000 pieces, a local machinist might do just fine. Or maybe you want to outsource overseas? Ask around and see what people say about certain factories. There’s nothing wrong with going offshore if it saves money and keeps your overhead low, but make sure there are controls in place (i.e., third-party inspections) to ensure that things are being made as planned and that quality is up to par—no matter where your molds are coming from. 2. Are There Other Costs Associated with Getting Molds Made?

When you’re planning to create a new product, one of your main considerations will be getting plastic injection molds made. However, it’s important to note that having molds made isn’t enough—you also need mold-making equipment and consumables like special resins and other materials needed for building and maintaining molds. This means there are two additional costs when looking at getting plastics molded—the cost of buying or renting equipment for molding as well as mold maintenance and repair costs over time. One major benefit of working with an injection molding company in China is that many companies can provide these additional resources and services, making them ideal partners for companies looking to get their products made.

Equipment Costs

Before you can get started, you’ll need a few pieces of equipment that will run you about $500 to start. This includes an injection molding machine and a plastic box for custom-made molds. (It’s possible to save money on both by buying used.) Once you have these tools, making your own molds is just a matter of getting some silicone from a place like Amazon and mixing it with hardener—and voila! You can make as many molds as you want with that same batch. There are some great videos online showing how to do it if you want more details.

Mold Costs (Tooling Costs)

Mold costs vary greatly depending on what you’re trying to make. Some of our clients used our services to get one injection mold made, while others contracted with us for hundreds of injection molds. To give you a better idea of how much it will cost, let’s break down an average project in which we design and build tooling for 12 different products, each in three different materials. This project required 24 tools total, with $90K going toward hard tooling (tools that are built once and then used over and over again) and $120K going toward soft tooling (tools that have to be built anew for every single product). Hard tooling accounts for 45% of your bill, while soft tooling represents 55%.

Injected Material Cost

Injection molding materials

Depending on your injection material, a plastic injection mold can cost anywhere from $200,000 to $20 million. Different plastics and resins have different prices depending on their specific properties. For example, high-performance engineering plastics such as PEEK and PEKK are very strong but expensive. On the other hand, nylons are very affordable but not as durable in demanding environments. If you know what material you’re going to be working with, then it’s easy to find an injection molding supplier that specializes in that field. A quick search online should do it! It just depends on how much you want to spend for a quality product

How Much Does It Cost to Create a Mold? : Like so many other steps in product development, it’s difficult to put a price tag on creating plastic injection molds. However, it’s generally considered to be one of the most expensive parts of launching a new product. Since there are so many factors that go into mold-making costs, you’ll need to start your own research and get some quotes before making any final decisions. Keep in mind that smaller companies may not have as much experience with certain types of production and may therefore have higher labor costs. Smaller companies might also require an upfront nonrefundable deposit for their services.
